SPOTLIGHT: JAPANESE DESIGNERS

Japanese Designers Sydney Australia Junya Watanabe, Sacai, Comme des Garçons

Expanding the Japanese Vanguard at Parlour X

At Parlour X, we’ve long championed the most visionary and avant-garde voices in fashion. Today, we are proud to expand our Japanese brand portfolio with three of the most iconic names in the global fashion landscape: Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe and Sacai.

Each of these labels shares a DNA rooted in innovation, artistry, and defiance of convention — making them perfectly aligned with the Parlour X ethos and the desires of our discerning clientele.

COMME DES GARÇONS

French for “like boys”, Comme des Garçons is a pioneering force in fashion, helmed by the enigmatic Rei Kawakubo. Since its founding in 1973, the brand has revolutionised the fashion world with its poetic deconstruction, radical silhouettes, and refusal to conform to trends. Kawakubo, alongside her husband Adrian Joffe, has cultivated a universe that empowers the modern artistic woman, with designs that challenge aesthetic norms and redefine what clothing can be.

The label flourished globally in the 1980s, becoming synonymous with avant-garde Japanese design. Its diffusion line, Comme des Garçons PLAY, introduced in 2002, has since become a cult favourite — revered for its minimalist basics and the now-iconic bug-eyed heart motif that adorns every piece with quiet whimsy.

The runway shows for both Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe are among the most exclusive and imaginative events of Paris Fashion Week, with guest lists limited to the upper echelons of global editorial prestige.

Parlour X’s relationship with Comme des Garçons began in 2005 — a defining moment for Director and Buyer Eva Galambos. That first buying appointment at Place Vendôme remains etched in her memory, where an anticipated introduction became an emotional buying experience. Since then, Parlour X has been one of the privileged few Australian stockists, with Eva and Rebel Sorensen invited to attend the Paris shows, seated amongst the world’s top editors from Vogue US, UK, France, and Italy.

In 2016, the Head of Showroom and the Head of the Australian region visited The Church, our Paddington boutique, and were so impressed they presented Parlour X to the entire Comme des Garçons team in Paris — a testament to the strength and integrity of this longstanding partnership.

JUNYA WATANABE

Junya Watanabe is revered as one of fashion’s most cerebral and quietly radical designers. A protégé of Rei Kawakubo, Watanabe began as a patternmaker at Comme des Garçons before rising through the ranks to launch his own namesake line in 1993.

His collections are defined by an intricate balance of romance and rebellion — tailcoats and techno fabrics, nip-waist jackets and synthetic textiles. Watanabe experiments with silhouette, structure, and surface like no other, earning his place as a true “techno-couture” designer.

For over a decade, Parlour X has held the exclusive Australian buy for Junya Watanabe. For Eva Galambos, it’s not only a business decision, but a personal love affair with a brand that continues to set the tone for fashion seasons ahead. Eva consistently identifies Watanabe’s work as trend-setting — pieces that influence the industry long before their effects are seen elsewhere.

At Parlour X, Junya Watanabe is viewed through the lens of art. Our boutique is a destination for the global Comme des Garçons community, who appreciate both the intellectual rigour and pure beauty of his collections.

SACAI

A defining figure in contemporary fashion, Chitose Abe founded Sacai in 1999 after honing her craft under Junya Watanabe at Comme des Garçons. Often referred to as one of the “Children of Comme,” Abe has carved a unique path with her hybridised design approach — marrying elements of sportswear, tailoring, and technical innovation.

Sacai is celebrated for its reimagined classics and fearless juxtapositions — a trench with pleats, a sweatshirt with lace, or a blazer spliced with nylon — every piece is a study in contrast and cohesion. Abe’s ethos of duality, deconstruction, and emotion gives rise to garments that are both directional and wearable, structured yet fluid, intellectual yet romantic.

Since introducing Sacai to Australia, Parlour X has remained a champion of Abe’s vision. Eva Galambos continues to bring her discerning eye to every collection, curating powerful pieces that resonate with a clientele that values originality and modernity.

Sacai is a label worn by the fashion elite — editors, stylists, and tastemakers — yet it remains deeply rooted in authenticity. Its progressive values, including a commitment to fur- and feather-free production, align with the increasingly conscious mindset of today’s consumer.

Sacai is more than fashion. It’s an idea — and a movement — that we are proud to nurture.

LOOKING AHEAD

The addition of Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe and Sacai to our Japanese designer curation at Parlour X signifies more than an expansion — it’s a celebration of visionary design, deep-rooted relationships, and a shared commitment to artistry and integrity in fashion.
