The summer holidays are over, and along with the inevitable back-to-work blues comes another all too familiar feeling of exasperation: ‘where did all my clothes go’!
The outfits that you had on high-rotation last season suddenly seem dated and bo-ring, after weeks of wearing your summer brights. The good news? You can infuse newness to your neutrals with a clever buying strategy.
We enlisted the guidance of Lana Wilkinson, one of Melbourne’s most notorious fashion and celebrity stylists who collaborates regularly with the city’s top beauties (think Bec Judd and Megan Gale). Read our interview below for her easy guide to refreshing your office look for the New Year.
What are 5 new season styles that can update your wardrobe?
Staples are key to an effective wardrobe update. If you get the basics right, then you will always look chic and on trend in any season.
1. Minimalist strappy sandals
They are a great way to create your “Carrie Bradshaw” moment , while still being extremely versatile.
2. Pleated Skirts
The pleated midi skirts from the latest Calvin Klein 205W39NYC collection are the perfect pieces to accentuate your waist. They can be worn in warmer weather with a tee, and can then be layered with a jumper and chunky boots in Winter.
3. Fresh Kicks
A new pair of sneakers is a useful update to your wardrobe. Wear yours with denim and a blazer for a casual but chic look.
4. Cool Shades
A new pair of sunglasses is a perfect way to update your look without having to do a complete wardrobe overhaul. I’m loving round styles at the moment as they seem to be universally flattering on all faces.
5. Bold Blazers
You can never go wrong with a blazer update. The blazer is my go-to piece to elevate an outfit. It’s a workwear essential that can just as easily be worn on weekends.
How can you still look polished when it’s not blazer season?
In the warmer weather, I think it’s important to have great accessories to compliment your summer dresses. These will polish your outfit and ensure that you look “done” while keeping cool. Having your handbag, sunglasses and jewellery on point can really elevate an outfit without too much effort. A great pair of heels is the perfect tool to take you flawlessly from the beach to the bar. Opting for neutral hues will also refine your look.
If you could suggest one new season pair of heels, what would they be and why?
The new season Fendi sling backs are on the top of my shoe wish-list. They have a sports luxe feel which make them perfect paired with denim, but they can also be worn with a killer mini dress in the evening. The sharp pointed toe and sling back style is perfect for elongating the legs. Who doesn’t want that?!
What are the three colours someone could infuse into their wardrobe to update their classics?
Especially in Melbourne, we wear a lot of black and white so it can be great to introduce colour to make our outfits bolder and more exciting. I’m still seeing striking colours on the runway so it’s great to translate these to the every day. At the moment I’m loving variations of pink, red and green. These may sound scary, so if you’re too timid to wear a bold colour you can begin by introducing it via accessories.
