Designer Interviews

Serge Ruffieux
Designer of Carven

September 03, 2018

Introducing Mr. Serge Ruffieux, the new creative director of Carven. In the role, Ruffieux oversees all ready-to-wear and accessories, with his first collection taking place during the Resort 2018 season which Parlour X has re-introduced to our stable. Previously, Ruffieux led the Dior design team under Raf Simons. Prior to Dior, the Swiss-born Ruffieux worked at Sonia Rykiel and held a position at Moschino.

Tell us about your background.

Prior to Carven, I was at Dior and worked respectively with John Galliano, Bill Gaytten and Raf Simons. I have spent close to a decade at Dior as head designer of the women’s ready-to-wear and haute couture studios. I was the co-artistic director with Lucie Meier after Raf left, and we did five collections together. Before this, I spent more than five years working with Sonia Rykie

Where do you find inspiration?

Like Madame Carven, travel is a major source of inspiration. I’ve travelled a lot as well but I am also inspired by places that I’ve never been to.

What is your vision for Carven?

Life has changed; fashion has changed. Everything here has evolved. I’m definitely trying to take a different approach and in that way, it’s important to show a real break. The heritage is still a big part of my design process but I want to tell a new story for the house, one that will evolve with each new chapter.

Who is the Carven girl that you are designing for? How do you see her?

I immediately wanted to anchor her in real life with a new, urban attitude. I’m interested in a broader spectrum for this Parisienne. I love diversity and that’s also what I was trying to embody from the outset—to place Carven in the street. To give a sense of Carven in reality. We should be addressing girls, but many types of girls—girls with character.

Your take on Carven seems slightly more eclectic yet still polished.

This is what I’m trying to do. I call it “clash cool” because I love contrasts of universes. Something that inspires me very much is the French idea of desuet, or old-fashioned. Even as a name, Carven itself is a little old-fashioned. But I think the future is there in that idea, and this new, cool image will project from the house.

Do you think the Parisian girl has changed?

The idea of the bourgeois boheme is no longer as strong. I think the context is much broader now. And it’s important to acknowledge this. Let’s talk about the shoes because they seem determined to make a statement. am passionate about accessories. There’s no miracle formula for a best-selling bag—you never know—but in any case, with the shoes, we proposed the car shoe sole, which is functional, but then these details that seem to come from a vacation somewhere. We thought of travel and a wardrobe that was urban, sophisticated, almost sporty, but sports more like tennis and golf.
