Describe your role.
I truly do a bit of everything, but I am the Creative Director, Head Designer and Social Media Manager first and foremost.
You began your career as a wardrobe stylist working on feature films in New York and LA. Did you ever envision pursuing a career in design?
Ever since I was a young girl, I was creating my own designs and modifying vintage clothing. I was the girl with the bedroom wallpapered with Vogue magazine editorials and covers in High School, so it was never a far-fetched idea to be doing what I do today.
How did you establish Jennifer Fisher?
After facing many health issues while trying to get pregnant with my first child, I finally got pregnant with my son Shane, naturally. When he was born, I searched everywhere to find the right piece of jewellery to represent the significance of him and was unable to find exactly what I wanted – so I decided to make my own. It was a very simple clean gold ID tag with his full name on it. I would wear that one piece on set as a stylist and friends and clients started asking for their own shapes and names to represent what was important to their life. From there, the line was born.
Describe your brand.
My brand is meant to be truly individual. In my mind, jewellery is the most personal piece of fashion and it should be able to be tailored according to your mood or style. I believe that jewellery should respect that every woman layers and styles their jewellery differently, so I am aim to make pieces that are for everywoman and that never go out of style.
Ten years into the Jennifer Fisher label, what has been your proudest achievement?
Well its not 10 years quite yet – next year! But, I have to say that being named a finalist in the Vogue CFDA Fashion Fund and then going on to be nominated for the Swarovski Award in Accessory Design. Those are definitely some of my proudest achievements as a designer.
How and where do you hone your design influences?
Really by myself looking through old architectural and photography books. Also, watching and listening to real women has greatly shaped my brand.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned since creating your namesake label?
Always trust your gut. Always.
How important is the international market to your brand?
The international market is now our focus and the most important aspect of our next phase of growth.
Do you feel business acumen is just as important as one’s design skill?
Yes, I do. Especially in my case, as I have built my own business. On the contrary, not everyone will say the same. I studied Business Marketing at USC and this has been the most valuable piece of building my brand on my own. I run all my own social media and up till this week I have run the company. I just hired my husband as my president!
Have you been fortunate enough to have a mentor?
I have found some along the way but none are official. My most important one is Andrew Rosen who built Theory, Helmut Lang, Proenza Schouler and Rag and Bone. He has given me very sound business advice over the years.
What is your personal style philosophy? Brands you love?
I’m pretty minimal these days, but I love to mix. Céline, Rochas, Marni, Dries Van Noten, Balenciaga, Chanel, Marc Jacobs. I’m especially loving Marques Almedia frayed denim right now and Julien David as well.
You are known for stacking on your jewels in an effortless way; what is a Jennifer Fisher essential?
Our charm necklaces or burnished diamond cuffs are the core of our business. I also always like to layer in all the brass pieces with the diamond pieces from our fine collection. Right now I’m really into silver and the clean statement minimal pieces. Always a choker as well!
From Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker to Rihanna – do you have a brand muse?
I would definitely say Rihanna. She has supported my business immensely over the last few years. She is incredibly smart and I have huge amount of respect for her and how well she has built her brand.
What interests you outside of fashion?
Cooking, cooking and more cooking! If you look at my Instagram account, you’ll see that I love to post food pictures. My mom sent me to cooking classes after school as a child and my love of food has evolved from there. I also grew up watching my mother in the kitchen, something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
What is your favourite city in the world?
New York City.
The perfect day is…
It would start with cooking with my children in the morning, then skateboarding and scootering around the city in the early afternoon along the Hudson. It would end with going to one of our favorite restaurants in the West Village for dinner, where we sit outside on the water and watch the sun go down.
In your experience, how has the industry changed?
It has become much more saturated over the last couple of years; at least in my space of jewellery. It is more competitive than ever, whereas most ready-to-wear designers are now creating jewellery lines as well.
What advice would you give to a young emerging designer?
Don’t take no for an answer, EVER. I always say, “If I could have 5 dollars for every time someone told me no, I would be retired.” Keep going, and know that is just one person who is telling you no – the world is filled with a million more who will say, YES.
