Claudia Crosby wouldn’t change a thing about her professional journey; a bold statement yes, but one signifies a certain confidence in the belief that all things happening for a reason. As the current Australian marketing & communications manager for Jo Malone London and La Mer, you could say that that sort of confidence has served her well. Read on to discover how she did it.
Describe your title and role.
What was your formal background or education?
Straight out of school I studied a bachelor of business, majoring in marketing & event management.
What inspired you to pursue your career?
When I was 23, I was working in an events coordinator role for an accounting firm. I wasn’t passionate about the role and had the realisation that you could work in an industry that you were truly interested in. I took time to myself and brainstormed what my dream job would look like. I started to learn about jobs that I didn’t even know existed. I always had a passion for luxury brands and the stars seemed to align as a marketing coordinator role came up at YSL Beaute and my beauty career began from there.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career, thus far?
So many moments! I’m so lucky to work with such beautiful brands and with so many wonderful people. One of the most recent highlights was a campaign we launched for Jo Malone London called ‘Just Because’. The concept is about celebrating generosity and every-day life moments. We hosted an intimate event at a private residence in Vaucluse and carefully crafted over 100 personalised ‘Just Because‘ gifts. I also had the privilege to attend a global conference in Venice this year with Jo Malone London. It was the first global brand conference, where we were immersed into all things Jo Malone London. On the final night we were surprised with a carnivalesque dinner at the most incredible venue on the Grand Canal hosted by Jo Malone London Girl, Poppy Delevingne.
What advice would you give someone wanting to follow your professional path?
I would tell them to try and get into the industry as soon as they could. Even if it means taking a step backwards to progress forwards. Also, relationships are so important. Start to build them in the industry as you never know where they may lead. Finally, work hard and take the extra steps where you can and ultimately you will be rewarded.
Any challenges you’ve experienced along the way?
Of course, we are being challenged every single day and it’s where our biggest lessons are learnt.
How do you measure success?
Success for me is made up of all the important things in my life. It’s about having balance, being healthy, surrounded by friends and family, the opportunity to travel and being able to work in a role that I find rewarding and feel passionate about.
Do you have a mentor or someone who has influenced you in your career?
Definitely, I owe so much of my career development to all the incredible managers I have had the privilege to work alongside.
How do you feel about the future of your industry?
I feel positive and excited about the future of the beauty industry. Ultra-luxury brands are outperforming the market and the industry is constantly evolving. So many new brands are entering the market and new innovation is always launching.
What words do you live by?
Say yes to every opportunity, you never know where it may lead. Keep a positive frame of mind and don’t take yourself too seriously!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
We are about to welcome our first child, so in 10 years I hope to have a happy family and be surrounded by wonderful friends and continue to have a successful career. My husband and I both have a passion for travel and most recently have invested in a ski lodge in Madarao Japan called ‘Kuma Lodge’. So hopefully being able to build this as a successful business and enjoy yearly ski adventures plus continue to explore the world.
Would you do it all again?
Yes! I wouldn’t change a thing.
