‘Every night before bed, I make sure I know what I’m wearing the next day. Sometimes if I had no idea, I would scroll through Instagram just to be inspired. And that’s how I started…’ says Chloe Jiang, the Shanghai-born, Sydney banker and digital influencer who stars in the latest X-Files shoot.
Balancing a full-time trade finance role at one of Australia’s leading banking institutions and a thriving social profile on Instagram, WeChat and Redbook, Jiang has flourished into a source of inspiration for those craving style insights on what to wear to the corporate office as well as off-duty mode.
Shot at a secluded Darling Point home provided by Sydney Contemporary Hotels, Chloe Jiang shares the inside story on her two worlds, while featuring in new looks of the season by Isabel Marant, Balenciaga, Fendi and newly introduced Maison Poi, Maison Margiela and MM6 by Maison Margiela.
How did you merge your finance world with documenting your personal style?
It’s funny that I didn’t get into finance until after I got my bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature. When I moved to Sydney, I needed a versatile profession that allowed me to discover more options when searching for a job, so banking and finance became my first choice. With Instagram, the intention was to inspire other girls when they struggle finding an outfit for work or weekend.
What does having a creative outlet bring to your working week?
The most important thing is that it brings me confidence… If I’m not comfortable with what I’m wearing, it will affect my mood for the whole day. Surprisingly, it has become a good ice breaker… My colleagues like to mention my Instagram for first-time meetings with clients and people are always amazed to hear how many followers I have on Instagram!
Which fashion designer is your personal source of inspiration?
Isabel Marant. I love her laid-back, playful style but the brand is still stylish and can remain as a wardrobe staple for years to come.
We had a lot of fun on your shoot! What trends have you adopted this new season?
I know we are in winter now but lucky we are in Australia! Slides and sandals are my all-time favourite. Like these ones from Valentino or these ones from Balenciaga – which can be dressed both up and down.
With a thriving presence on WeChat, Redbook and Instagram; what’s your favourite channel to use?
Instagram hands down! It does not need too much editing and description. Perfect for people like me who have a busy full-time job.
