Based in Japan, designer Junya Watanabe, who studied under Comme des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo, brings the avant-garde flavour of Tokyo to each of his awe-inspiring collections. His conceptual work uses a variety of unorthodox fabrics, some of which are spliced together to create deconstructed garments that are more reminiscent of works of art than mere pieces of clothing. Yet Watanabe does not ignore clean-lines wardrobe staples when designing his shows. He’s renowned for taking classics such as the trench coat and subverting them with embellishment or unusual cuts in order to create totally new and highly influential designs.
