Well, Gvasalia joined that league today, by risking the use of spandex, the synthetic stretch fabric that was invented by DuPont in 1958. Spandex takes intense color and print brilliantly, shrink-wraps the body, and, as he proved, can drape in a kinkily slinky, glamorous way. For many a year, stretch has been shunned in high fashion, except in the case of the dreaded athleisure trend. Safe to say, Balenciaga’s use of spandex had nothing to do with sport. Interestingly though, the Gvasalia knack is that his avant-garde instincts are grounded in street practicality.   Last season, he did that with off-the-shoulder ski jackets. The spring updates were a couple of witty inflatable gilets. But then? Enter a useful red nylon rainproof parka, with a hood tied, head-scarf-wise, under the chin. The latex and patent leather capes that ended the show were the final “fetish” punchline guaranteed to stimulate hundreds of requests for editorial shoots. But more important yet is the fact that he is also a designer who is contributing clothes that will really be worn on the street.   Witnessing the lean and preened street style brigade who walks the cobbles of Paris Fashion week clad in an ever-changing wardrobe of outfits, Balenciaga SS17 collection was christened by commentators as the current uniform every stylish woman must-have. Consisting of styles such as the Spencer jacket – this black cropped tuxedo jacket is a Balenciaga classic remixed to directional effect by Demna Gvasalia. It’s cut to a sharp, boxy silhouette with mid-length sleeves, and exaggerated shoulders with double breasting. Wear it with similarly cropped cigarette trousers for a new take on after-dark androgyny or black tie events.   Taking a contemporary spin on the classic tuxedo style, Balenciaga’s Battle dress has long-sleeves with cropped collared button closure jacket, enhance with its amade/khaki and cognac colourway.  Honor the polished feel of the perfect style with a box bag and point-toe flats.   When it comes to work wear, it can be tricky to find pieces to wear to work that are smart and timeless, but also show your personality. To answer your work wears woes, look to Balenciaga’s Lavalliere top. Channeling effortless femininity with the rose/white stripe and blue/white stripe, the Lavalliere blouse has a relaxed silhouette that falls from the necktie, and is designed with pretty elasticized gathered waist with button front detailing. Wear it with everything from low-key skirts to slick tailoring and watch as it instantly transforms your working wardrobe.   Beautiful fabrics and floaty silhouettes this SS17 seasons focus. The vert long-sleeved strangled dress is decorated with poppy print, and cut featuring a nigh neck with ruching, fitted waistline and dramatic thigh split, falling just below the knee. Pair it with fuss-free heels for summer events.   Tap the elegance and exotic vibes of Balenciaga SS17 collection with the A-line knitted skirt. It features a water lily print in the rich colour of vert, and is cut to end elegantly beneath the knees. Pick out the colours with a blouse, and polish with block heeled pumps.   Concluding the SS17 RTW collection – Balenciaga’s emeraude multi styling blouse. Complete any look with a modish spin with this batwing top crafted from super-soft cotton fabric, and accented with a halter necktie and water lily print detailing. Wear it with black trousers and loafers for a modern, monochrome look, as seen on the current IT girls of the fashion industry, including, Kate Moss, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Louise Roe, Olivia Palermo and Lily Aldridge.   A style, which chimes the SS17 IT trend – Balenciaga’s quadro square top slip in heel is a hybrid of mule and sandal, cut away at the ankle and secure with smooth or textured patent leather. Team them with utility separates, and a textured clutch.   This SS17 must-have is the Balenciaga giant arena slides, punctuated with gleaming gold and silver-tone metal studs to heighten the tough-luxe feel of the strappy silhouette. They’re crafted in Italy for mid-shine grained leather, and rest on a small-stacked wooden heel with rubber grip for traction. Available in Noir and Gris fume at Parlour X, style your pair to offset a breezy summer dress.
