If any other designer released a statement saying she was thinking about “invisible clothes,” you’d leap to the conclusion that they were talking about seeing through some sort of sheer fabric to a naked body beneath (there’s been a lot of that about this season). But it was Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons who said this, while proceeding to construct a series of some of the biggest, most covered-up shapes ever to occupy a runway. Rei Kawakubo’s status as an independent entrepreneur in charge of a significant self-built fashion retail empire, which is also a haven for small avant-garde designers, gives her the freedom to do what she wants with a show.   Fresh from Comme Des Garcon’s SS17 runway, the Navy long-sleeved blazer is the perfect trans-seasonal staple. It contours the body with angular shoulders and feminine waist silhouette, and is finished with a 3 button-closure to enhance an hourglass figure.  To add the statement of this staple style is the ruffle featured at the shoulders of the pin-stripe blazer, the perfect must-have, which can be teamed it with Comme Des Garcon’s drop crotch pinstripe pants and ankle-strap sandals for a fresh approach to spring/summer dressing.   Comme Des Garcon’s black or navy wool gaberdine, drop crotch pants will bring an edgy undertone to easy weekend looks. They’re crafted with a season must-have of dropped crotch, and feature an elastic waistline. Assert the rebellious sensibility with a weathered denim jacket and tough leather boots or slides for the perfect causal look.   Making a case for style comeback this SS17 season is Velvet – timeless, chic and feminine. Comme Des Garcons showcases an array of colours including dark blue, burgundy and red in this seasons IT fabric. Sitting high on the waist before falling softly for elegant movement is the midi calf-length skirt. Try it with a coordinating cropped top, or a tucking-in sweater for a more low-key look enhances this skirt’s eye-catching fabrication.   A perfect example of Comme Des Garcon’s contemporary femininity – cut to a midi silhouette is the embroided skirt – with an array of floral motifs in either an A pattern Lurex green or C pattern Bordeaux, this style can be paired with a tucked-in blouse and heeled boots for the most ladylike take. Reflecting Comme Des Garcon’s artisanal aesthetic is the drop crotch pants. Woven with either a pattern Lurex green or C pattern Bordeaux, they have a loose, relaxed, wide-leg fit with an elasticated waistband for ease.  Team either pair with a free-flowing top and leather sandals for the ultimate off-duty look.   Need a quick and easy, on the go outfit to wear this SS17 season?  Comme Des Garcons black and white bomber jacket is a masculine classic with a feminine twist. Made from washed satin, it’s crafted to a classic varsity-style shape – note the long-sleeved detailing with front and white stripe down arms. Slip it over a white T-shirt and voluminous culottes for weekends in the city.   Comme Des Garcons is lauded for directional twists on off-duty staples, like the black and white dropped-crotch pants. They’re crafted from cotton, subtly decorated with polka dot, and cut to sit comfortably on the hips before falling to a tapered leg that hits at the narrowest part of the calf. Showcase the contemporary silhouette with pared-back slides.   From familiar to feminine, knitted from luxuriously cotton for a slim-fitting silhouette, and shaped with a peter pan collar. Try it with checked trousers at the office.
