This season, Balenciaga designer Alexander Wang attempts to cut away from the couture codes of Cristobal Balenciaga, of which she has been fairly reverent in past collections. In Resort 2015, Wang introduces Balenciaga to her early work of blending sport and the street, creating a sportluxe theme that is both original but also highly suited to the Balenciaga philosophy and reputation. Keeping with the unmatchable standard of sophistication set by Balenciaga, Wang is still careful and sparing in her use of colour, with staples of white and black, as well as summery additions of soleil (yellow), cobalt (blue) and peche (light pink) featuring on the free-flowing and artistic styles. The Balenciaga pieces this season are basics that standout for the quality and class that are embedded in their fabrication and simplistic, yet elegant features, that are seemingly inspired by summer boat trips, celebrating the sea and the sun in colour and design. The frill sleeveless or short sleeved top in noir/cobalt or noir/soleil features an uneven flowing, frill hem resembling the waves of the sea, or the rays of the sun. It is a sophisticated piece that also reflects the mood of the season. For an effortless statement piece, the frill element also features in a sleeveless dress for a summer’s day out, as well as in a skirt for a more elegant and classy feminine look. The pieces of this collection complement each other with standalone tank tops and t-shirts such as the Tank T-Shirt jersey and T-Shirt Jersey in white and black, that when paired with the overlap midi skirt or overlap skirt in navy/peche makes for the perfect feminine sailor style while emphasising Balenciaga class and eliminating tackiness associated with the sailor girl look. Wang’s adds elegance to the traditional tank with the droopy tail tanks that flow longer to the side that creates an effortless elegance that transforms a casual look to one of sophistication. The droopy tail feature is also in a long sleeve style for a cooler summer’s eve. To further emphasise the theme of the collection as well as keeping with the high fashion theme of summer knits, the boatneck short-sleeved knit mix top is a unique addition to a Balenciaga wardrobe and is a must-have this season, as is the navy/peche trapeze duster.
