Since taking over the creative reigns at Yves Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane has infused the legendary French fashion house with his rock-inspired vision, permanently shifting the direction of the brand. The most notable change was his immediate decision to rebrand the storied Paris-based fashion house to Saint Laurent Paris, which caused major controversy among the fashion world. Since it’s repositioning, Saint Laurent Paris has cultivated a devoted celebrity following including Alexandra Richards, Alison Mosshart, Kate Moss, Scarlett Johansson, Selma Hayek, Angelina Jolie and Sky Ferreira. For Spring/Summer 2014, Slimane was inspired by New York in the mid-1980s. For his third ready-to-wear collection delivered in the blacked-out Grand Palais venue, the designer referenced power dressing with sharp, masculine tailoring and form-fitting leather skirts pared back with boxy-cut jackets and sheer blouses. From the Yves Saint Laurent archives, Slimane took the Rive Gauche red lip motif seen in the label’s 1971 show and splashed it over a simple black dress and a sequined single puff shouldered top. Aside from the lips, Slimane re-worked the notorious Le Smoking in the shape of a silk-lapelled jumpsuit, with a V line that plunged almost as low as the navel. Among the standout pieces from Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2014 runway is the metallic leopard-print jacquard skirt. The cropped khaki safari jacket, a reworked hit from the YSL archives, is another must-have piece from the Spring Summer collection. This cropped khaki jacket is an effortless go-to piece for transeasonal daytime dressing as it is a great layering piece for the cooler months and can be thrown over t-shirts in between seasons. For accessories, Slimane reinvented Saint Laurent’s iconic monogramme leather clutch in eighties disco hues including neon orange and cobalt blue. These statement clutches are the perfect accompaniment to an all-black ensemble and undoubtedly one of the most sought-after accessories of the season. The classic Cassandre bag made an appearance again this season. Crafted from luxurious black suede and accented with the iconic gold YSL logo, metal Saharienne tassel and chain shoulder strap, the sleek Cassandre bag is a worthwhile investment due to its timeless appeal. In terms of footwear, models paraded down the runway in a slew of kitten-heeled boots and court shoes. The Cat boots are a directional take on a timeless wardrobe staple. These black leather lace-up ankle boots feature a sharp pointed-toe and wearable kitten heel that will allow you to comfortably transition from day to evening. The court shoes are available in black patent leather with a matching ankle strap or smooth black leather with a silver studded ankle strap. These timelessly chic low-heeled pumps will complement any outfit.
