New York based designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough have consistently maintained their habit of incorporating childhood and art-inspired designs into their collections since the establishment of the Proenza Schouler label in 2002. Proenza is a must-have label for creative and stylish women. This season’s collection carries through the abstract impressionism from last season with designs heavily inspired by artist Clyfford Still. The collection reflects the energetic brushwork and spontaneous or subconscious expression portrayed in Still’s incredible artworks. The use of chiffon, such as in the tweed chiffon peplum jacket in black and lavender, is a new feature for these designers and suits the pre-season collection perfectly, demonstrating no slackening in effort or reputation for Proenza. The jacket can be worn over the long sleeved satin crepe double layer top in black or white on a slightly breezier summer night. For the working woman in summer, the sleeveless georgette tie neck blouse blends sophistication with artistically inspired white and black Shibori prints, and is perfectly paired with the knit pencil skirt in black. For an alternative option without the tie-neck, there is the georgette Asym top in marine/mint demonstrating Proenza’s consistency with theme in their collection, similar to that of an artist in his collections of work. Proenza again emphasises theme and art with the Asym pant in black and white woodblock, reflecting ambiguous paintbrush techniques mirroring that of Clyfford Still. The pant can be paired with the varieties of long-sleeved tissue jersey t-shirts that come in black and white, as well as striped and feather prints. The baggy tie die tissue jersey t-shirt also caters to the abstract theme of the season and can be paired with a mini-skirt and ankle boots for a savvy summer look. Stepping away from the light and feathery prints is the bold 2-tone loop jacquard skirt in red and black that accurately portrays the darker abstractions of Still’s artwork. It is a unique and dramatic piece that stands out at any evening event and is a must-have of the Proenza pre-season collection. The glamour of the jacquard skirt can be heightened with the addition of the PS11 Mini Classic New Lamm bag in black. The bag also comes in biscotti and in a medium size (PS11 Classic New Lamm bag) to transcend from day-to-night and from season to season. Weighed-down, crew neck styled pieces feature strongly in this season’s Proenza collection as demonstrated by the long sleeved knit jumper. What is compelling about this season of Proenza is the real sense of ease instilled in the clothing despite the hard work and thoughtful inspirations that have influenced and manufactured these creations.
