The fashion game has changed and the industry is opening its doors to the designer who’s fearlessly ripping up the rulebook. Enter, Demna Gvasalia whose status was cemented with the revolution of Balenciaga from the inside out, praised as “a powerful emerging forced in today’s creative world.” By president and chief executive of kering – parent company to the iconic Parisian house, Franccois-Henri Pinault. Demna Gvasalia has the intelligent openness and self-deprecating humor of someone who resists being seen as an aloof, ivory-tower genius. By funneling the energy of an entire amorphous, migrating, guerrilla partying under culture of disaffected Euro-kids toward a kind of fashion breaking point. The are his people, and the phenomenon he’s spearheaded has moved at a speed akin to the internet-fueled emergence of populist political leaders. A power, which has seen Vetement styles such as the floral tea dresses, lopsided hoodies, widened shoulders, and dangling sleeves in perspective spread like wildfire. With a unique approach, nurtured by sociological observation, Demna’s future was set on Balenciaga – which was in term a nature fit. Fast-forward to the present, to a complex known as Vetements-Balenciaga fashion’s new order. Now hailed as the leader of a new collective fashion movement, Gvasalia retains his role as head designer and spokesperson for Vetements, the buzzed-about collective of seven anonymous designers based in Paris where he made his name after rising through the ranks at Louis Vuitton and Maison Martin Margiela, Part of the city’s alterative fashion scene, Vetement has drawn the focus away from traditional houses with its simple, streamlined cuts and authentic, youthful energy. Only three seasons old, the brand has already been nominated for LVMH’s Young Fashion Designer Prize. It has now become one of the most anticipated fashion weeks to debut since Nicolas Ghesquiere took up the reins at Louise Vuitton, resulting in – with no surprises an Instagram explosion (one of the main forces by buzzed-about brand Vetements) when Balenciaga’s new artistic director showcased his first collection. Demna Gvasalia reference Balenciaga’s archives by giving the Swing blouse a distinctive collar. The classic white piece with polka dot print is designed to sit with the back draping open to reveal a hint of the shoulders, or moved forward for a more modern look. Wear over fitted trousers to keep all the attention on this simple yet striking shirt. Balenciaga elevated the classic shirt dress with the long-sleeved collared shirtdress style. It is cut from cotton to a universally flattering A-line silhouette, and detailed with a close-fitting round neck and long-sleeves- roll them up to emphasize the laid-back feel. Patterns ran throughout the label’s RTW PRE-SS17 collection – decorated with streamlining water lily print motifs, the A-line knitted skirt features an elasticized waistband to provide flexible definition.
