Rei Kawakubo’s world this season evidently serves as reminder of the designer’s ability to push herself to a less grand scale, as demonstrated by the colourless standpoint taken in this collection. It has stated the a Comme Des Garcons collection is a reflection of the personal style tasted of Kawakubo herself, which could well be a contributing factor to the sense of ease offered in her spring collection. Silhouetts were forgiving this season, but still inspired by a unique and elusive quirk such as a dropped crotch or ballooning pant leg, that has become synonymous with a Rei Kawakubo piece. A spectrum of Japanese fabrics can be seen – from circular lace to cool rayon, that enhances a multilayered mood such as t-shirts under linen dresses, with the models evidently favouring modesty in this collection. Comfortable cotton is the star fabric, made elaborate by overstitching to highlight garment shape. Kawakubo follows the high-fashion trend of spring/summer knits, with a series of long sleeve crewneck and v-neck knits fabricated in one-hundred per cent wool and featuring youthful patterns of stars and dots. For a less playful variety the long sleeved knit also features in a v-neck and crew neck stripe wool acrylic style with navy and khaki stripes. Kawakubo considers the season when fabricating knits as exemplified by the linen series of long-sleeved crew neck and v-neck knits that feature in stripes of ecru and dark blue or ecru and red. The knits are the ideal basics of the season that maintain ease of dressing and casual sophistication. A favourite of high-fashion this season are the much-coveted culottes. Rei Kawakubo adapts her playful star patterning to elastic waisted culottes in either black or navy. The elastic waist design is a common feature this season with the elastic waisted skirt and pant series in dot patterning in colour waves of black and navy, as well as the elastic waist gingham check skirt in black/natural, which strongly resembles the Japanese influence and the emphasise of relaxation the Rei Kawakubo values in her designs. In keeping with the quirky character of a Comme Des Garcons collection, there is the drop crotch cotton stretch twill pants in black, navy and white. The Wool Gaberdine crop sports jacket features a more athletic aesthetic in comparison to the other pieces of the collection, emphasising Rei Kawakubo’s ability to keep in line with high-fashion trends without deterring from the attributes that make a unique Comme Des Garcons piece. The sports jacket comes in colour waves of black and navy. Comme Des Garcons dresses are simplistic and femininely embroidered this season as demonstrated by the sleeveless cotton satin dress in black, navy and off white, the perfect transitional piece for any occasion.
