What inspired you to start your label, Cecilie Copenhagen?
I’m inspired by everything whether it be art, other cultures and other designers. However it wasn’t the reason Cecilie Copenhagen started. I sewed the first Shirt-O in 2011. It was before a night out and I was experiencing a clothing crisis!
Did you receive any formal training in fashion prior to starting your brand?
I went to the Fashion Design Academy
. However I have always had an interest in fashion and design. When I was 3 years old my grandma taught me how to sew.
What is your creative process?
I have a lot of scrapbooks and I keep my eyes open if you know what I mean. I believe that great inspiration comes from your everyday life!
Describe a day in your life.
Morning coffee! Then off to the Cecilie Copenhagen studio where I do pretty much all of my work. After work I usually take a run, which helps me clear my head. In the evening I’m with my lovely boyfriend or enjoying a fun night out with the girls.
What has been your career highlight thus far?
I think we have had many highlights so far! It is difficult to point one out, but how it all started was pretty amazing. On the opening day in the Cecilie Copenhagen studio we had almost 400 people lining up.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in business?
It’s a tough business and you need to consistently believe in yourself! If you do things well it’s because you do what you’re good at. Not what others tell you to do.
What does it take to be a successful designer?
Hard work and confidence, and not being afraid of what people might think of your work.
How did your collaboration with Parlour X come about?
We were contacted by the lovely Eva at the very beginning. It didn’t take long to discover Parlour X was exactly the kind of store we were looking for in Sydney, so everything went smoothly!
Did you anticipate Australian customers falling in love with your brand so quickly?
Absolutely not. However I now see how our main line perfectly suits the Australian lifestyle and weather. But at that time I think we just had our first European stockist so everything was very new for us.
How important is social media to your brand?
Very important. Our Instagram profile was for a long time our only communication platform. I love the way you can express through pictures rather than text. I am very visual and the idea of our Instagram profile is to show people what we think, how we are inspired and how we work.
With our industry constantly changing, how do you see the future of fashion at large?
I believe there will be significant change over the next two decades and I am looking forward to being a part of it.
Describe your own personal style?
My mood kind of dresses me. During summer times I love to colour up. In winter I opt for darker colours. My wardrobe includes everything from high-end labels to vintage and unknown labels. I also have an obsession with coats, shoes and accessories.
How would you describe the Scandinavian fashion culture?
Minimalistic, simple and practical with grey, black and white as the main colours.
When you aren’t designing, how do you like to spend your time?
I love the ocean as it helps me relax. Long walks through Copenhagen
and spending time with my boyfriend are also top priorities.
