Since Pierre Balmain first founded his haute couture fashion house, Balmain has gained prominence for its consistent presence in high fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and its popularity amongst celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Beyonce and Kate Moss. Olivier Rousteing follows his predecessor Christophe Decarnin’s intention to bring Balmain’s distinctive couture into the 21st century with his SS15 collection, which in contrast to last season’s lineup of army inspired looks, features lines, stripes and grids – a reflection of creative modernity. The colour palette of black and white, as portrayed by the long sleeved striped dress, with pops of red, yellow and sapphire blue in the fitted, bodycon pieces like the bandeau multicoloured skirt, demonstrate bold and graphic effects while maintaining the grid and striped patterns. Rousteing maintained his reputation for highly-structured and embellished rock n roll designs, with strong shouldered jackets making a bold appearance on the runway. The Classic Shape double breasted viscose and silk jacket comes in black and white and additionally, there is also the Classic Shape Silk Lapel Acetate Jacket as a 2 button alternative for a unique take on the classic jacket. Then there is the staple Balmain Leather Jacket in Noir, a must-have in every high-fashion wardrobe, and a prominent feature in editorials such as Marie Claire and Elle, and blogs such as Nicole Warne’s Gary Pepper, Anna Del Russo, Park and Cube and The Blonde Salad. Rousteing also demonstrated smartness in his ability to maintain his rebellious edge through more forgiving garments such as the short-sleeved t-shirt in black or white with the signature Balmain on the front, and the added embellishment of buttons. In typical glamorous Balmain fashion, the runway SS15 debut featured the biggest and brightest of the modeling world, with Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jourdan Dunn making an appearance, and Kendall Jenner making her Paris Fashion Week debut on the Balmain runway with proud sister and brother-in-law Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in attendance.
